The basis of my work is that of figurative sculptures, and my inspiration, comes directly from the animal form. I grew up with animals– horses, dogs, cats, & a large variety of animal, in general. So, when I began to create, this simply had to be my theme.
My aim is to try to capture the essence of the animal- its personality, emotion and movement. It's not an anatomically correct figure that I am trying to achieve– it's about the essence of the animal and the expressive nature of the animals. The pieces are a representation of my ink drawings in ceramics, which is the type of finish I'm looking for from the oxides and stains.
Each piece has individual characteristics and personality, like that of any animal. My work is about injecting life and energy, through expression, and capturing the playfulness of the canine. My pieces are based loosely on my own dog. I seek to express the different poses and try to portray her many mannerisms.
Generally, within my work, I sought to portray the fundamental charactures of the animals, via the movement & expression of them, individually. I intended to capture their very life characteristics, using a medium which can be seen as mundane objects to the casual observer. Transforming each individual ceramic piece into my intended art form.
